The San Roque Equipment Center, designed by SENER, receives the 2010 COAVN Architecture Award24/03/2010 (Spain)
The Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos Vasco-Navarro (Official Basque-Navarre Architects Association) has awarded the 2010 COAVN Architecture Award, in the Urban Design and Landscape Architecture category, to the ‘San Roque Complex’ project, developed by the SENER Architecture team.
Located in Portugalete (Vizcaya), the San Roque multi-purpose building, for which SENER carried out the planning and works management, comprises a senior citizens' centre, a youth centre and an underground car park. The founding concept for this integrating project was a giant rock, which finally took shape in the form of a series of terraces which find meeting points with the surrounding streets. The rock comprises all the facilities except the youth centre, which remains a separate element, light and floating in the upper part. Its design is distinguished by the interplay of transparency and colours on the youth centre's façades, as well as the integration of the car park, business premises and the senior citizens’ centre into a large square which is adapted to the surrounding topography.
According to the jury, this award recognises the “clarity of vision in dealing with a complex urban problem, such as a sloping square, by organising the space according to uses and pathways through the arrangement of platforms that strengthen the activity".
The award follows previous recognitions, such as inclusion in the X Bienal Española de Arquitectura y Urbanismo 2009 (BEAU – Tenth Spanish Biennial Exhibition of Architecture and Urban Development 2009) as one of the most representative architectural and urban development works of the last two years. This project was also nominated for the 2009 Spanish Architecture Prize. In the words of the project creators, the SENER architects Juan Francisco Paz and Gloria Para, "the COAVN award represents a major recognition for the SENER Architecture team, as it sees the design of this work being honoured by an institution composed exclusively of architects".
