The helicopters will be able to operate without restriction in controlled military and civilian airspaces, in compliance with the requirement of new regulations, as well as giving them self-protection and defence systems that will allow them to be deployed in multinational missions with a low-medium threat level. FORAN Design Awarded First Prize in Korean Universities' Contest25/11/2016 (South Korea (Republic Of Korea))
Hae-Jun Ji and his team of other sophomores and juniors at the Naval Architecture and Ocean Systems Engineering department of the Busan-based Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU) won the first prize in the 25th National Ship Design Contest for University Students organized by the Society of Naval Architects of Korea (SNAK).
The award ceremony was held within SNAK’s 2016 General Meeting & Annual Autumn Conference on 3 November in Changwon. The First Prize certificate with a cash award of 1,000,000 won (1,000 US dollar) was presented to the KMOU team by Seok-Ho Ban, President of SNAK.
The Contest has been held annually since 1992. Each year SNAK sets two assignment categories: the design of a determined type of ship and the open-theme design of an innovative ship. The students have to design a ship according to organizer’s requirements and international rules, and then submit the drawings usually delivered to class society and customer at the initial and basic design stages.
278 students from 15 universities participated this year in the specific-theme category, the design of a Medium Range Tanker, and 140 students from 9 universities in the open-theme category. An independent jury chaired by Keon-Wu Park, head of SNAK’s Ship & Offshore Design Research Committee, and comprising representatives from the main Korean shipyards, class society and other marine-related institutions convened in October to select the best design.
Ji’s 17-member team used principally FORAN for completing the design of an energy-efficient 50,000 dwt MR Tanker, including hull form definition, general arrangement, naval architectural calculations, CFD analysis, power estimation, midship section drawing and FEM analysis. Tutored by KMOU professor Beom-Soo Hyun and assisted by SENER’s naval architect Seong-Hee Mun in the application of CAD, they worked enthusiastically on their project from June to September.
“We are very happy to receive this award, which we think is the result of our hard work. And so thankful to have FORAN; it was easy to learn and use it, even as students; it offers a user-friendly, intuitive workflow-based interface, especially FBASIC module,” team leader HJ Ji proudly said in an interview at the end of the event.
FORAN has been included in the KMOU curriculum since 2012, when SENER donated the license of the system for the faculty and students to use it for education and research.
The new facility will consist of an electricity generation plant using biomass from the forestry and farming industries. With a 40 MW gross nominal electricity output it will be one of the largest high-efficiency low-emission biomass renewable energy plants in Spain.... [+]
SENER has organized the ninth edition of FGROUP, bringing together the main users of SENER’s shipbuilding and design system, FORAN. In 2017, this event was held on November 17 and 18 at the SENER offices in Tres Cantos (Madrid). With a great turnout by the biggest companies using FORAN worldwide, this biennial meeting grows in stature with every edition.[+]
