SENER conference ‘Gaia, an adventure of a million stars’ at UPV/EHU in Space

On Thursday 2 November at 7:00pm at Biscay Aretoa of UPV/EHU in Bilbao, Eduardo Urgoiti, an engineer from the engineering and technology group SENER, will give a talk entitled ‘Gaia, an adventure of a million stars’, in which he will explain the various technologies that SENER has developed in this mission of the European Space Agency (ESA). 

Gaia is the ESA's program to observe and catalog billions of stars, approximately 1% of those that populate the Milky Way. Its objective is to produce a 3D map of our galaxy that is far more accurate than the one produced by its predecessor, the satellite Hipparcos. Launched in December 2013, Gaia began to send its first data in September 2016 and since then it has provided information on hundreds of thousands of asteroids and comets in the Solar System and tens of thousands of failed stars or brown dwarfs. In addition, it has observed some 20,000 supernovas in the universe and is expected to discover 7,000 planets beyond our Solar System.

When it completes its mission, Gaia will be the cornerstone that will allow us to know the origin, the composition and the evolution of the universe, as well as the laws of physics on which it is based.

All of this will be presented by the Aerospace project manager of SENER, Eduardo Urgoiti, in his conference. He will also set out SENER's key contribution to this mission, as the party responsible for the manufacture of the deployable sunshield that ensures the thermal stability of its optical elements. Measuring almost 12m in diameter and with 12 identical frames which deploy simultaneously and which hold two thermal blankets positioned in parallel, it is the largest unfolded sunshield in the space. In addition, SENER has been responsible for the positioning subsystem for the secondary mirrors, known as M2MM, which allows the telescopes to focus and includes a precision mechanism and the electronics which control it. 

This conference is organized by the UPV/EHU as part of ‘UPV/EHU in Space’, an event prior to Zientzia Astea 2017 – Science Week 2017. SENER's traditional participation in this event takes on a special importance this year, as the company is celebrating more than 50 years as a key player in the international space industry, in which it has successfully delivered more than 275 devices and systems for satellites and space vehicles for agencies of the USA (NASA), Europe (ESA), Japan (JAXA) and Russia (Roscosmos).

Today, SENER is Spain's leading company in the ESA's science programs for its engineering contributions and it has participated in more than half of its programs. For this reason, SENER is present in various activities, such as the ‘UPV/EHU in Space’ exhibition, where it is displaying several of its projects, the “Gaia, an adventure of a million stars” conference and the txoko ‘SENER, pioneering Space’ which can be visited between 8 and 12 November.

The GAIA Deployment Sunshield Assembly (DSA), provides a stable and continuous shadow environment to the SVM and PLM of the satellite.
