SENER holds an exhibition for the general public to share in its 50th anniversary of Space projects30/03/2017 (Spain)
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of SENER Aerospace with the general public of Biscay and the Basque Country by offering a range of scientific activities. That is the intention behind SENER’s '50 years fill our Space' exhibition, which opened today to the general public. The exhibition looks back at the most important milestones that the company has reached over its five decades in the aerospace industry, through its most significant missions. Biscay’s Minister for Economic and Regional Development, Imanol Pradales, and the Space director of SENER, Diego Rodríguez, officially opened the exhibition today at the Auditorium of the University of the Basque Country (UPV). It will remain open until Sunday April 9 and can be visited from 10 am to 6.30 pm.
Content of the exhibition
The exhibition is open to the general public and entry is free of charge. It displays objects and missions in which SENER has played an important role:
- Rocket launch tower in Kiruna (Sweden): SENER’s first space project, in 1967, and still in operation.
- The Gaia satellite: Which observes and catalogues billions of stars to create a 3D map of our galaxy. SENER was responsible for several pieces of equipment.
- The European Space Agency’s Rosetta programme: Whose mission was to study a comet close to Jupiter.
- Meteosat Second Generation (MSG): Providing reliable weather forecasting a week in advance.
- ExoMars: The ESA’s Mars exploration programme.
- Cluster: A mission dedicated to studying the earth’s magnetosphere.
The exhibition will also include a large panel showcasing SENER’s major aerospace milestones and an interactive screen with which adults and children alike can practice their skills as astronauts by playing a videogame called Let’s go to Mars. Visitors will also be invited to read the comic entitled ‘Una trayectoria estelar’ (A journey through the stars), specially created for the anniversary and giving a child’s view of the company’s most important historic events. Throughout the company’s history, SENER has supplied over 275 pieces of hardware, systems for satellites and space vehicles to space agencies such as ESA (Europe), NASA (USA), JAXA (Japan) and Roscosmos (Russia); all involve technological hardware that have not recorded any faults.
Lecture by Jordi Torra
This evening at 6.30 pm, also in the Auditorium of the University of the Basque Country (Sala Baroja), an educational lecture open to the general public will be given by Jordi Torra, Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Barcelona. The purpose of this lecture, entitled Diálogos d’Espacio (Space Talks) is to give the general public some insights into space science and to discuss the Gaia mission, in which SENER has played a central role.
Torra will be joined on the podium by Jordi Portell i Mora, a researcher at the Catalan Institute of Space Studies (IEEC / ICCUB). Diego Rodríguez, SENER’s Space Director, will represent the company and act as the moderator and facilitator of these Space Talks.
The protagonist of the comic, entitled “SENER, a Stellar Trajectory,” is an 8-year-old boy who goes over the successful history of SENER in Space and explains the company’s participation in some of the main projects during these 50 years in the space sector. During this time, SENER has supplied over 270 hardware, systems for satellites and space vehicles for space agencies such as ESA (Europe), NASA (USA), JAXA (Japan) and Roskosmos (Russia); all involve technological hardware that have not recorded any faults.
