Graduate from University of the Basque Country wins Best Doctoral Thesis award from the SENER Foundation31/05/2017 (Spain)
Telmo Echániz from the University of the Basque Country has been recognised with the Best Doctoral Thesis award granted by the SENER Foundation, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Echániz won the award based on his doctoral thesis entitled ‘Infrared spectral emissivity studies on metals and materials for solar thermal power plants’. The jury from the SENER Foundation made its decision based on the relevance and applicability of this thesis to the Power, Oil & Gas business area at SENER, as well as for the quality and clarity found in the way its contents are presented.
In a ceremony held at the company's facilities in Madrid on Wednesday, 31 May, Enrique de Sendagorta, Honorary President and Founder of SENER and President of the SENER Foundation, delivered the award to the author and also recognised the work of thesis supervisors Raúl B. Pérez and Manuel Tello. The current President of SENER, Jorge Sendagorta, and the Director of the SENER Foundation, Juan Seijas, were also in attendance, along with two of the foundation's board members.
Regarding the winning thesis, Juan Seijas stated, “selecting of the winning thesis was very complicated, because, as every year, the submissions were of the very highest quality. However, on this occasion, right up to the jury's last discussion, there was a ‘tie’ in the number of points awarded to the two theses”. Moreover, he emphasised that “the decisive argument was that knowledge and skills developed by Telmo can be almost directly applied to the work carried out by SENER”. And he ended by saying that “this is not by any means the most important criterion, but it served to break the tie in all the other criteria used to assess the quality of the theses”.
SENER Foundation Best Doctoral Thesis Awards
With the 5th edition of this annual recognition, the SENER Foundation hopes to stimulate top-level research in the fields of science and technology where SENER carries out its activities, namely Aerospace; Infrastructure and Transport; Power, Oil & Gas; and Marine. The jury is made up of professors from the cited scientific and technological disciplines, researchers from SENER's technical staff, SENER Foundation board members who hold doctoral degrees, and the previous winners of the Best Doctoral Thesis award.
The award for Best Doctoral Thesis from the SENER Foundation comes with a €12,000 prize for the author of the thesis and an additional €3,000 to be shared among the thesis supervisors. The next edition will be announced during the third quarter of 2017 through the SENER Foundation's website: www.fundacion.sener.
The SENER Foundation celebrates its 15th anniversary with a new website
SENER Foundation debuts website to coincide with its 15th anniversary celebrations. With an updated look and restructured contents, the website is designed to facilitate access to information about the Foundation's lines of activity (education and research and joint engineering projects). It gives a special starring role to grant winners, awardees, and volunteers, who now have their own section available to share their experiences.
In addition, and with the aim of offering a better user experience, the new website has been created based on the principles of responsive design, which facilitates access to the information from any device.

The new facility will consist of an electricity generation plant using biomass from the forestry and farming industries. With a 40 MW gross nominal electricity output it will be one of the largest high-efficiency low-emission biomass renewable energy plants in Spain.[+]
