The Bokpoort thermosolar plant, built with the participation of SENER, receives an award from South Africa’s SANEA03/10/2016 (South Africa)
The Bokpoort thermosolar plant, located in South Africa and built with the participation of the SENER engineering and technology group, has received the South African National Energy Association (SANEA) award for the ‘Best renewable energy project 2016’. The plant is considered to be a pioneering project in the South African renewable energy sector, as well as being valued for its contribution to the social and economic development of the local communities.
The plant, opened in March 2016, was built by the consortium led by the Spanish companies SENER, ACCIONA and TSK, with participation from the South African company Crowie. Generating an uninterrupted supply of power from a solar plant is an important milestone for South Africa and for the renewables industry as a whole. Bokpoort has shown that, thanks to an intelligent and realistic design and the site’s levels of solar radiation, its 9.3-hour storage capacity allows it to produce electricity continuously 24 hours a day. This makes Bokpoort the plant with the largest electricity storage capacity anywhere on the African continent.
Siyabonga Mbanjwa, Regional Director of SENER in South Africa, has highlighted that SENER is today renowned for the reliability of its thermosolar power technology solutions. He added that: “our aim is to continue contributing to our country’s sustainable and industrial development”.
